The Cleveland Cavaliers are in an enviable position.
If the blockbuster deal goes through, they will have a point guard in Isaiah Thomas who is coming off a year where he outperformed Kyrie Irving (by a substantial amount) during the regular season.
Even when the new acquisition’s hip remains problematic, LeBron James will be capable of shouldering more responsibilities, while Kevin Love and Jae Crowder staff up to maintain the 2016 winners playing in a high level. Let’s not forget the effects of adding Ante Zizic because depth, either.
If the transaction is vetoed because of Thomas’ health, the Cavaliers will either soldier with a malcontent Irving or even find a new taker for its point protector. They’ll stay loaded with talent.
This offseason is going to be deemed a failure if they can not locate a huge return for Irving–and the Thomas swap certainly qualifies as such–because addressing their main difficulty (defense) was not exactly done with the improvements of Derrick Rose, Jose Calderon and Jeff Green. However they could score aplomb, which should make them favorites.
James doesn’t seem to have declined because his age swells. Love enjoys more chemistry than ever with his superstar teammate, and Tristan Thompson is advancing. It is one brimming over with talent, and most of the pieces fit together well, although this might be an old roster.
